What is a Riad?

With the "Dars", the "Riads" symbolize the very essence of the architecture of traditional Moroccan dwellings. They are generally located in the medinas that constitute the oldest parts of cities in Morocco. If the term "Dar" literally means "house", the word "Riad" can be translated as "garden". We can then say that it is a house focused on an indoor garden.

The riad is largely inspired by the traditional Arab-Andalusian habitat, which is both a Roman and Persian heritage. Square or rectangular in shape, it can be arranged around a central patio with a fountain, a living room or a dining room. With one or two floors, this type of dwelling is spacious with visible columns forming a succession of galleries opening onto the patio.

The patio, which is naturally cool and air-conditioned, takes its inspiration from Persian gardens, oases and Islamic gardens. There are trees and greenery, but also water basins or refreshing fountains. This patio, located on the ground floor, is generally dedicated to common areas where the living rooms, dining room and kitchens are also located. As for the private spaces, which are the bedrooms, they are traditionally located on the first floor. The riad's roof is also equipped to accommodate a terrace on which a solarium is built with a panoramic view of the roofs of the other riads in the medina.

On the aesthetic side, Moroccan riads offer a decoration combining traditional craftsmanship, harmony and luxury.

It is made with different ancient elements of different architectures and often offers magnificent frescos with geometric Arabic figures in zellige or ceramic…

Today, most of the riads have been transformed into hotels or guest houses. This has made it possible to preserve them and introduce travellers to them.

Thus, at the bend of the narrow streets of the old town, the last of the small gates without any distinctive sign, visitors are amazed to discover real jewels of architecture and craftsmanship, havens of peace and beauty, protected and relaxing places.

Those of you who know Les Jardins de la Médina will have immediately recognized our establishment in this traditional description.

Of course, our house has been adapted to meet the requirements of modern comfort. The rooms are spacious and elegant and generously offer services that can only be found in the best hotels. But we have kept what makes the originality, soul and authenticity of the house.

We have added a demanding and enthusiastic staff whose qualities of seriousness, discretion and friendliness make our customers happy.

And then, this house has a particularity that makes it unique among all, its extraordinary 3000 m2 garden. The largest private indoor garden in Marrakech. Much more than a patio, this immense and luxuriant private garden with a beautiful heated swimming pool gives our riad not only its name but also its personality.

Welcome to the Gardens of the Medina!
